Vedanta’ s Solar-Powered Water Initiative Set to Benefit Over 1000+ Community Members Kasira Village Panchayat
Shri Laxman Munda, Hon’ble MLA for Bonai Constituency inaugurated the Vedanta Iron Ore Odisha’ initiative on solar-powered water infrastructure systems at Kasira Gram Panchayat, which will benefit ~1000 community members. The initiative will greatly enhance availability of potable water & also amplify the usefulness of sustainable & clean energy solutions that directly benefit vulnerable communities.
The initiative, undertaken as part of Vedanta IOO’s CSR Project ‘Nirmal’ includes the installation of 5 solar-powered borewells and 26 water stand posts. The arrangement will help bring uninterrupted access to clean drinking water to the villages of Bhanjpali (Munda Sahi), Nadidihi, BICO Colony, Rengalbeda (Indira Colony & Rahadi Hatting). By shifting to solar power, this infrastructure ensures resilience against power cuts, while reducing the carbon footprint of water delivery systems—a powerful example of green innovation in rural development, a theme spotlighted by the company’s ongoing campaign – Iron Will for Greener Planet.
Speaking at the event, MLA Shri Laxman Munda said, “Water scarcity has been a critical issue in the villages of our region. I thank Vedanta for stepping up with a solution that’s not only effective but environmentally responsible. These solar borewells are proof of how industry, government, and communities can work together for meaningful change. Vedanta’s continued work in education, health, and livelihood is commendable.”
Community leaders including Prabhat Panda, Dibakar Naik, and Ashok Samal joined senior executives from Vedanta IOO Mr. Biswanath Sahoo, COO, and Mr. Sambit Nayak, Head CSR. Attending executives highlighted the broader scope of Project Nirmal, which also advances goals in public health, education, livelihood, and women’s empowerment.
Mr. Ajit Patra, CEO of Vedanta Iron Ore Odisha, remarked, “This solar water project is a reflection of our commitment to building climate-resilient communities through clean energy and responsible innovation. By leveraging renewable energy, we aim to create resilient & sustainable communities. Furthering Vedanta philosophy of ‘giving back’ meaningfully, we endeavour to bring about true progress measured not just by economic growth, but by the positive & lasting impact on communities.”
With Project Nirmal, the company is proactively addressing clean water access, sanitation, and climate resilience in underserved areas. These solar-powered installations are part of a growing effort to decarbonize infrastructure, reduce environmental stress, and enhance community well-being in tandem. As World Environment Day approaches, Vedanta’s initiative stands as a clear example of how corporations can lead by embedding sustainability at the heart of social impact.
