Vedanta IOK Promotes Sustainable Mining at MEMC Week Observance

  • MEMC Flag Hoisting & Pledge taking done at Vedanta – Iron Ore Karnataka.
  • Poem, slogan writing & quiz competition on ‘Environment’ and ‘sustainable mining’ held at IOK and for school children.
  • Various cultural programmes by school children for the MEMC event.

Chitradurga, Karnataka: Raising awareness and recognizing the efforts in the mine environment and mineral conservation, the 24th Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation (MEMC) Week Celebrations were held at Vedanta – Iron Ore Karnataka, Chitradurga. Themed around – ‘Green Mining – Driving Viksit Bharat’, several activities were organised in the presence of Mr. N Devaraj, General Manager – Mines, MSPL, Mr. B. Divesh, Sr. Geologist, Kalburgi Cement, Mr. Keshav Chandra Mahto, Assistant Geologist, BKG, Mr. Gopal J, Sr. Officer (Environment), BKG, Shrishaila Gouda, CEO, Vedanta – Iron Ore Karnataka, IOK EXCO, and other executives.

The proceedings commenced with the flag-hoisting, followed by the MEMC pledge, address by the dignitaries, plantation drive at the IOK premises, overall presentation, site visit, visit to CSR initiatives such as the Computer Labs & Rainwater Harvesting System at Indira Gandhi Residential School, Kadleguddu.

 Speaking at the event, Shrishaila Gouda, CEO, Vedanta Iron Ore Karnataka said, “ The MEMC week provides us with an opportunity to spotlight our initiatives towards sustainable mining. At Vedanta IOK, we prioritise safe & responsible production with emphasis on environmental stewardship and progress and development of the communities. Adoption of EV tech, safety radars, plantation drives, electrification of diesel-based equipment etc. We reaffirm our commitment to the progress of the people of Karnataka and towards environmental sustainability.”

 Mr. N Devaraj, General Manager – Mines, MSPL, expressed, “The MEMC week serves as a reminder that mining and sustainability should go together. In alignment with the theme – ‘Green Mining – Driving Viksit Bharat’, Vedanta IOK has actively promoted sustainable mining practices through initiatives such as the ‘Mass Plantation Drive’ & robust measures have been taken to reduce its carbon footprint & environmental impact of mining. I appreciate the efforts taken and wish Vedanta IOK well for its future endeavours.”

Other activities carried out as a  part of the MEMC week event included  slogan writing and poster making competitions for school children on ‘Environment and Sustainable Mining’quiz competition and felicitation of employees, workmen and business partners who have contributed to environmental sustainability, and a display of Vedanta IOK’s sustainability initiatives such as the Alternative Livelihood Opportunities Project (ALOP), products made by the Vedanta Tailoring Training Centre ( VTTC) women, and so on, at the IOK premises.

The MEMC Week is an annual event organized by the MEMC Council under the aegis of the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. This event is an essential initiative in India’s mining sector and is organized to raise awareness and recognize efforts in the mine environment and mineral conservation.
