Vedanta Iron Ore Karnataka Empowers ASHA Workers with Essential Equipment to Strengthen Community Healthcare

Chitradurga, Karnataka: Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to community health and well-being, Vedanta – Iron Ore Karnataka (IOK) organized an ‘Essential Equipment Distribution Program’ on the occasion of the Universal Health Coverage Day.

The initiative, organised under Vedanta Sesa Goa’s Project ‘Aarogya’, benefitted over 50 Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM), equipping them with tools vital to enhancing their critical roles in healthcare delivery, and was held at Taluka Health Office, Chitradurga.

The initiative was graced by Dr Renuka Prasad, District Health Family Welfare Officer, and Dr Girish B. V., Taluk Health Officer (THO), Chitradurga, who motivated the healthcare workers and emphasized the importance of their contributions to community health. During the program, a wide array of essential medical and utility items, including BP apparatus, torches, weighing machines, oximeters, glucometers, measuring tapes, bags, umbrellas, shoes, and water bottles were distributed. These resources are expected to significantly enhance the ability of ASHA and ANM workers to provide effective health services across Chitradurga district, ensuring timely and accurate healthcare for rural and underserved communities.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Renuka Prasad highlighted the crucial role of ASHA and ANM workers in bridging the gap between rural communities and accessible healthcare. She commended Vedanta IOK’s efforts to empower these frontline workers and called for continued collaboration to address pressing healthcare challenges in the district.

Sudha, an ASHA Worker hailing from Bheemasamudra village, Chitradurga, & beneficiary of the initiative said, “Vedanta IOK has provided us with essential equipment such as an umbrella, water bottle, microphone, BP apparatus, and so on, which would enable us to provide the essential healthcare services to the community members. The essential equipment would also help us to examine the primary health status of the patients. On this basis, we can provide accurate information to the hospitals. This helps us to refer patients to hospitals, based on the patient’s condition. Thank you, Vedanta IOK, for providing the kit and essential equipment. This kit would greatly help us for field visits.”

Under Sesa Goa’s Project ‘Aarogya’, over 40,000 lives have been impacted across the locations of Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, & Odisha, in FY ’24. Vedanta IOK’s other initiatives under Project ‘Aarogya’ include the Mobile Health Unit (MHU), which provides services to 17 remote villages in Chitradurga, twice a week, Multi-specialty Mega health camps, benefitting over 300 community members recently, Medical equipment distribution initiative, Contribution of >600 units of blood through the Mega Blood Donation Drive, regular health awareness sessions on Cervical cancer, Malaria, Menstrual Health and Hygiene, and so on. Vedanta IOK has previously conducted Multi-specialty Mega Health camps at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Sirigere. Vedanta IOK has benefitted around 40,000 people through the Mobile Health Unit (MHU), Health awareness sessions, and around 30,000 people through the Medical OPDs, as per the data from FY ’24 and FY ’25, till date.

This initiative is part of Vedanta IOK’s larger mission to create a healthier and more inclusive society through community-focused programs. With efforts like this, Vedanta IOK continues to strengthen the public health infrastructure and improve the quality of life for the communities that it serves.
