The ‘Miyawaki’ Way: VISL’s Commitment to Sustainability

Across VISL, sustainability forms the basis of our initiatives. Plantation drives are regularly taken up with the aim of ‘greening’ the surroundings, and these are undertaken not only within site premises but also in concert with the communities. One of the most efficacious measures has been the world-renowned Miyawaki plantation method.

This technique has been successfully applied at VISL plant sites in Jharkhand and Goa & accomplished conversion of previously barren and industrial land tracts into verdant ‘green-scapes’. Over a period of years, ~80000 saplings were cumulatively planted, resulting in green zones that are replete with thriving endemic plant species & also supportive of bio-diversity around the emerging ecosystems.

The sites have been meticulously maintained with ~85–90% survival rate. This has been achieved with reliance on scientific methods, combining traditional & local knowledge base. Soil restoration, composting, land preparation, drip irrigation  and other associated actions have led to the development of these lush spaces which have in turn contributed to lower ambient temperatures, biodiversity revival, and a rich mix of flora, testifying to the possibilities that exist when sustainability & industrial resilience join hands for a greener future.
